Spotlight: City of Hope

By Laura Coulter

Not long ago, hope seemed distant to the Kuria people of Tanzania. They were living in a war zone: two rival tribes ransacked one another’s villages, killing people and stealing their cattle. Many children were left with one or no parents from this tribal violence. The challenges of poverty, AIDS, illiteracy and lack of access to health care also held a strong grip on the Kuria. But much has changed since 2006, when Teamwork Ministries started the City of Hope (COH) in Ntagatcha village in Western Tanzania. At the COH’s Christmas celebration in 2010, more than 1,000 people from the surrounding villages (once main tribal war zones) were gathered peacefully. The killing has stopped and the cattle thievery has declined. Read more...

By Alyce Gilligan

One percent doesn’t seem like a big figure. Even in terms of giving, setting aside 1 percent for a charity doesn’t seem like an intimidating order ... right? Haiti: The Vanilla Bean Project

By Steven DeVries

Editor’s note: Back in 2008, we asked a group of people who worked in Haiti to record some thoughts and images with us. Today we look back at an island that was devastated by poverty and natural disasters even before it was completely knocked flat by the 7.0 earthquake. Read more...

Sweet Sleep

By Elizabeth Hyndman

It’s not uncommon to hear someone complain of not sleeping well—though they most likely spent the night on a comfortable mattress, which could be anything from an expensive, down pillow-top model to a cheap box set from a warehouse store. In any case, though, these beds do offer a degree of comfort and safety. For some children, however, sleeping in a bed isn’t part of their daily life. Many children around the world are orphaned and abandoned, cold and without a bed. They are all too familiar with the misery of not sleeping well. Read more...

Rice Bowls

By Alyce Gilligan

In 1980, a pastor from South Carolina went on a trip to Calcutta. Confronted with the realities of poverty, famine and disease, he returned home determined to contribute to orphanages in such communities. But the goal was to innovate traditional methods of giving, creating a tangible reminder of the need in order to make a tangible difference. The result? The Rice Bowl, a small, plastic container that works like a piggy bank, only it resembles a bowl full of rice, the standard meal for much of the world. Thirty years later, Rice Bowls is a respected nonprofit that has collected tens of millions of dollars via Rice Bowl donations to feed and provide for orphans around the world. Read more...
